Discover Slap Kozjak: Slovenia’s Hidden Waterfall Gem

Slap Kozjak, also known as Kozjak Waterfall, is one of Slovenia’s most captivating natural wonders. Tucked away near the town of Kobarid in the heart of the Soča Valley, this hidden gem offers visitors a magical blend of dramatic scenery, lush forest trails, and crystal-clear waters. Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and hikers alike, Slap Kozjak is a must-see destination in western Slovenia.

Slap Kozjak is located in western Slovenia, close to the picturesque town of Kobarid. The waterfall is part of the Kozjak Stream, which flows into the Soča River. It can be reached via a well-maintained hiking trail that is part of the Kobarid Historical Trail, making it a perfect combination of nature and history.

Why Visit Slap Kozjak?

Unique Natural Setting

Unlike open waterfalls, Slap Kozjak is hidden within a natural stone amphitheater, creating the appearance of a cave with a magical green pool at its base. The water drops about 15 meters (49 feet) into this emerald basin, framed by mossy cliffs and soft light filtering through the narrow gorge.

Scenic Hiking Experience

The hike to Slap Kozjak is short and suitable for most fitness levels. Starting from Kobarid, the walk takes around 30 to 45 minutes each way, following the peaceful Kozjak Stream. Along the route, visitors cross charming wooden bridges and pass remnants of World War I trenches, adding historical depth to the natural beauty.

Great Day Trip Destination

Whether you’re touring the Soča Valley or exploring the Julian Alps, Slap Kozjak is an excellent stop for a half-day trip. Other nearby attractions include the Napoleon Bridge, the Kobarid Museum, and various spots along the Soča River known for rafting, kayaking, and fly fishing.

When to Visit Slap Kozjak

The best time to visit is between late spring and early autumn (May to October), when the water flow is steady and the surrounding foliage is lush. During the summer months, early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding crowds and capturing the best lighting conditions for photography.
